How Should You Structure an AQA Psychology 16-Marker?

For a standard 16-mark discuss question assessing knowledge and evaluation, the marks are typically divided into:

  • AO1 (6 marks): Accurate and detailed psychological knowledge.
  • AO3 (10 marks): Effective evaluation using research evidence, analysis and reasoned arguments.

A useful structure is two concise AO1 paragraphs followed by three developed AO3 paragraphs.

For evaluation, try using PEEL: Point, Evidence, Explain, Link.

This helps you move beyond simply naming a strength or weakness and instead explain why your argument matters.

Remember that not every 16-mark question has the same assessment-objective split. Questions involving scenarios may also assess AO2 application.

What Does a Top-Band 16-Marker Look Like?

Our video uses this example question:

"Discuss the biological explanation of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)." (16 marks)

We demonstrate how to explain genetic and neural explanations before developing evaluation through research evidence, limitations of brain imaging research and the role of environmental influences.

One of the biggest mistakes students make is describing a study without explaining what its findings mean for the psychological explanation.

Strong evaluation should connect evidence directly to the question and explain its significance.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many paragraphs should an AQA Psychology 16-marker have?

There is no compulsory number. Two developed knowledge paragraphs followed by three evaluation paragraphs can be a useful structure, but the quality and relevance of your answer matter more than paragraph count.

How long should you spend on a Psychology 16-marker?

Around 20 minutes is a reasonable target in a two-hour, 96-mark AQA Psychology paper, although you should practise managing your time across the whole exam.

Do you need a conclusion for a Psychology 16-marker?

Not necessarily. A conclusion can strengthen your evaluation if it adds a relevant, supported judgement, but a generic summary won't automatically earn additional marks.
