AQA A-Level Psychology 2027 Specification Changes Explained

AQA A-Level Psychology 2027 Specification Changes Explained

Summary

The AQA A-Level Psychology specification has changed for students taking their exams in summer 2027. The updated specification was first taught from September 2025 and applies to A-Level Psychology 7182 exams from 2027.

The examination structure has not changed. Students will still sit three two-hour papers worth 96 marks each. Instead, AQA has removed some content, clarified several areas and updated terminology to make the course more manageable and reflective of modern society.

The largest update affects the Gender option, although important content has also been removed from Social Influence, Attachment, Biopsychology, Approaches and several Paper 3 options. Students should therefore make sure that their textbooks, revision notes and practice papers have been updated specifically for the 2027 AQA Psychology specification.

When does the new AQA Psychology specification begin?

The updated AQA A-Level Psychology specification, code 7182, applies to students sitting their A-Level exams for the first time in summer 2027. It was introduced for first teaching in September 2025.

Students taking AQA A-Level Psychology exams in summer 2026 remain on the previous version of the specification. This means it is important to check the examination year shown on any revision guide, predicted paper or online resource before using it.

AQA explains that the changes were made to:

  • Reduce the overall amount of specification content.
  • Give teachers and students greater clarity.
  • Update the language used so that it is more reflective of society.

This is not a completely new Psychology qualification. AQA has not introduced any new overall topics or changed the optional topic system used in Paper 3.

What has not changed?

The examination format remains familiar. AQA A-Level Psychology is still assessed through three written papers:

Paper 1: Introductory Topics in Psychology
Paper 2: Psychology in Context
Paper 3: Issues and Options in Psychology

Each paper lasts two hours, contains 96 marks and contributes 33.3% of the final A-Level. Students will continue to answer a mixture of multiple-choice questions, short-answer questions, application questions and extended-writing questions.

Paper 3 also retains the same optional structure. Students study one topic from each of the three option groups alongside the compulsory Issues and Debates topic.

Students do not need to learn an entirely new examination system. The main challenge is ensuring that everything they revise is included in the updated AQA Psychology 2027 specification.

AQA Psychology Paper 1 changes for 2027

Paper 1 continues to cover Social Influence, Memory, Attachment, and Clinical Psychology and Mental Health. However, several areas have been reduced.

Social Influence

Identification has been removed as a type of conformity. Students are now required to study internalisation and compliance.

AQA has also removed:

  • Conformity to social roles as investigated by Zimbardo.
  • The role of social influence processes in social change.

Other major areas remain, including Asch’s conformity research, explanations of conformity, Milgram’s obedience research, resistance to social influence and minority influence.

Memory

The separate types of long-term memory—episodic, semantic and procedural memory—are no longer included in the specification.

The wording surrounding eyewitness testimony has also been simplified. Students must still study leading questions, post-event discussion, anxiety and the cognitive interview, but the cognitive interview is now included within the wider eyewitness testimony section.

Attachment

Attachment contains one of the most noticeable reductions in Paper 1. The following content has been removed:

  • Caregiver–infant interactions.
  • Reciprocity and interactional synchrony.
  • Schaffer’s stages of attachment.
  • Multiple attachments.
  • The role of the father.

The wording “Romanian orphan studies” has also been replaced with the more specific English and Romanian Adoptees project. Animal studies, Bowlby’s theories, the Strange Situation, cultural variations, maternal deprivation and the effects of institutionalisation remain.

Clinical Psychology and Mental Health

The topic previously called Psychopathology is now called Clinical Psychology and Mental Health.

Most of the core content remains, including phobias, depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder and their explanations and treatments. However, AQA has updated several terms.

“Definitions of abnormality” is now described as “definitions in the field of mental health”, while “deviation from social norms” has become “deviation from social/cultural norms”.

AQA Psychology Paper 2 changes for 2027

Paper 2 continues to assess Approaches in Psychology, Biopsychology and Research Methods.

Approaches in Psychology

The Origins of Psychology section covering Wundt, introspection and the emergence of Psychology as a science has been removed.

Several smaller references have also been removed or simplified, including:

  • “Modelling” as a separate term within social learning theory.
  • “Focus on the self” within the humanistic approach.
  • The influence of humanistic Psychology on counselling Psychology.
  • Separate references to theoretical and computer models.

Cognitive neuroscience remains but has been repositioned within the biological approach.

Biopsychology

The biggest Paper 2 removal is biological rhythms.

Students are no longer required to study:

  • Circadian, infradian and ultradian rhythms.
  • Differences between the three types of rhythm.
  • Endogenous pacemakers.
  • Exogenous zeitgebers.
  • Their effects on the sleep–wake cycle.

The nervous system, neurons, synaptic transmission, the endocrine system, fight or flight, localisation of function, brain plasticity and methods of studying the brain all remain.

Research Methods

Research Methods contains only a small amount of genuinely new content. Control groups have now been added explicitly to the section covering control.

At the same time, AQA has removed confounding variables and thematic analysis from the stated specification. Several terms have also been clarified. For example, “sampling techniques” has become “sampling methods”, while the wording now refers to “measuring” reliability and validity rather than “assessing” them.

AQA Psychology Paper 3 changes for 2027

Paper 3 still contains compulsory Issues and Debates alongside three optional topics selected by each school. The option groups have not changed, but several topics within them have been updated.

Issues and Debates

Issues and Debates is largely unchanged. The final area has been simplified and now reads “social sensitivity in psychological research”.

Relationships

Evolutionary explanations for partner preferences, including sexual selection and human reproductive behaviour, have been removed.

“Virtual relationships in social media” has been renamed “online relationships”. The use of deception has also been added alongside self-disclosure and the effects of the absence of gating.

Gender

Gender has received the most substantial update in the entire specification.

The revised topic now distinguishes more clearly between biological sex and gender. Updated content includes:

  • Diversity in sex development, including androgen insensitivity syndrome.
  • Binary, non-binary and gender-fluid identities.
  • Biological explanations of gender development.
  • Martin and Halverson’s gender schema theory.
  • Gender incongruence.
  • Biological and social/cultural explanations of gender incongruence.

Freud’s psychodynamic explanation of gender development, including the Oedipus and Electra complexes, no longer appears in the updated content. The previous wording surrounding gender dysphoria has also been replaced by gender incongruence.

Students taking Gender must be particularly careful that their revision materials follow the 2027 specification.

Other Paper 3 options

In Cognition and Development, theory of mind remains, but it is no longer specifically listed as an explanation for autism.

In Schizophrenia, references to classification and the reliability and validity of diagnosis have been removed. Token economies have also been removed, although symptoms, issues in diagnosis, explanations, treatments and the interactionist approach remain.

In Eating Behaviour, explanations for the success and failure of dieting have been removed. In Stress, drug therapy remains, but named drugs such as benzodiazepines and beta blockers are no longer specifically required. There are no content changes to Aggression.

For Forensic Psychology, the atavistic form, psychodynamic explanations of offending and recidivism have been removed. The “top-down” profiling approach is now called the typology approach, while the “bottom-up” approach is now called the data-driven approach.

In Addiction, the theory of planned behaviour has been removed. Risk factors have been simplified to genetic vulnerability, personality and social influences, while the wording now refers to nicotine addiction rather than smoking behaviour.

What do the changes mean for students sitting exams in 2027?

The reduced content should make the course slightly more manageable, but it also creates a potential revision problem.

Older textbooks, revision guides and online resources may include topics that can no longer be directly examined. They may also miss additions and updated terminology such as control groups, deception in online relationships and the revised Gender content.

Past papers from the previous specification can still help students practise timing, application and essay structure because the examination design has not changed. However, some individual questions will test content that has now been removed. AQA has itself warned that older sample assessment materials may no longer be suitable as complete practice papers for the updated specification because of the subject-content changes.

Students should therefore:

  1. Use revision materials clearly labelled for AQA A-Level Psychology 2027.
  2. Create a checklist using the updated specification.
  3. Remove obsolete topics from older notes.
  4. Check older past-paper questions before completing them.
  5. Pay particular attention to Gender, Attachment, Biopsychology, Social Influence and Forensic Psychology.

Final takeaway

The AQA A-Level Psychology 2027 specification changes represent an update rather than a complete redesign. The three exams remain the same length and value, the Paper 3 options remain in place and most familiar theories and studies are still required.

The main differences are reduced content, clearer wording and more current terminology.

For students sitting AQA Psychology in 2027, the key is not simply revising more—it is revising the correct specification. Using updated practice papers, mark schemes and revision resources will prevent time being wasted on removed content and ensure that every topic studied is relevant to the summer 2027 exams.
